Let’s face it — passwords suck.
We all have way too many of them, we keep forgetting them, and half the time we’re just guessing what combination of words, numbers, or symbols we used last month. And let’s not even talk about those password rules that ask for a capital letter, a number, a symbol, and probably a drop of unicorn blood.
So yeah, passwords? Not the best idea. Here’s why.
1. We’re Just Not Great at Making Good Passwords
We try. We really do. But making strong passwords is hard, especially when you’re creating one for the 48th time this year.
So we go with something easy to remember, like:
🔹 password123🔹 iloveyou
🔹 or our dog’s name with our birth year:
bruno2010The problem? Hackers love those passwords too. They have lists of the most common passwords people use, and they just try them one by one until they get in. It's like leaving your front door key under the welcome mat — not very secure.
2. We Reuse Passwords Like Crazy
Let’s say you have one really good password. You use it for Facebook, Instagram, your email, your bank, your Netflix… and then one of those websites gets hacked. Guess what? That same password can now be used to get into everything else.
It’s like using one key for your house, car, office, and bike — and then dropping that key in a busy street. Yikes.
3. Remembering Passwords Is a Nightmare
Strong passwords are long, random, and impossible to remember. Something like:
G9$dk!L2xP@7Zq#r
Good luck typing that every time you log in.
Most people just give up and start writing them down, saving them in their phone notes, or reusing the same one everywhere. Not ideal.
4. It’s Super Easy to Get Tricked
Even if you have a great password, it doesn’t help much if someone tricks you into giving it away. Ever clicked a weird email that says, “Your account is locked — click here to reset”? Yeah, that’s phishing. And it works. A lot.
Hackers create fake websites that look real, and boom — you just gave them your login details without even knowing.
5. Companies Hate Passwords Too
It’s not just a headache for users — even companies are sick of them. Think about all the time and money they spend helping people reset their passwords, dealing with security breaches, or trying to guess if someone’s been hacked.
Passwords are a mess on all sides.
So, What’s the Solution?
The good news? We’re getting there. Slowly but surely, the world is moving toward a password-free future.
Here’s what’s helping:
🔹 Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): You enter your password, and then get a code on your phone. Double security.🔹 Face or Fingerprint Login: Fast, easy, and hard to fake.
🔹 Passkeys: These are like magic keys saved on your device. You don’t need to type anything — your phone or computer handles it.
🔹 "Login with Google/Apple/etc.": These options are actually safer if you have strong security on that main account.
Final Words
Passwords were good… like 20 years ago. But today, with all the tech we have, they’re just not cutting it anymore.
Until we say goodbye to them completely, do yourself a favor:
🔹 Use a password manager (it remembers for you).🔹 Turn on 2FA wherever you can.
🔹 And please, stop using your dog’s name with a “123” at the end.
We deserve better than passwords. And thankfully, better is on the way.
